the people's race

three months ago, i bought a new hat and started training for the soweto marathon. then there was running, lots of running and a few lost toenails. i finished the race on sunday 7, november with the help of a small army of amazing friends.
a wicked sunburn and ridiculously sore muscles weren't my only prize... i got the t-shirt! oh and a medal. now i'm off to eat another hamburger.

The Neighborhood

There are many distinctly unlovable things about Diepsloot but the people found there surely aren't amongst them. This is where my co-workers are from and our Umuzi students live - it is also home to more than a few characters.

Heritage Day 2010

Re-marketed as "National Braai Day" this year.
Despite my doubts on that strategy, we took part!

But we made it - 21.1km on a Sunday morning.

It Wasn't A Holiday Weekend

But we celebrated. The Dini's b-day, the end of our dog-sitting duties and the adoption of a green (and easily squash-able) cottage mascot. Seemingly only photos of the b-day recovery remain.

Umuzi + Kwena

Umuzi started a new series of workshops with 10 excellent learners from Kwena Molapo High School this past weekend. We find ourselves at the youth center in Diepsloot for our Saturday sessions - the township has an amazing, bustling vibe and we're happy to be in the mix.

Zeerust

Zeerust - an almost border town where I spent my Saturday afternoon whilst waiting for friends to do a quick run to Bots. Most of my time there centered around beverages. And trying (pretty unsuccessfully) not to draw attention to myself.
